"Kim at Happy Tails Travel is an absolute miracle worked. My 125 lb wolfhound more than exceeds normal size regulations, but she found me a kennel AND an airline that could fly him from Maui to Alaska - something that no other pet relocation service was able to offer."

We Put the Care in By Air With Care

By: Bridget Monrad, R.N. | Apr 05, 2024

Traveling can be a thrilling experience, but when it comes to our furry companions, ensuring their safety and comfort becomes our utmost priority. We know it can be scary to think about your pet traveling by air, but we are here to walk you through the whole process to ensure that your pet arrives safe, happy, and healthy.

Selecting the appropriate crate is crucial for your pet's safety and comfort during air travel. The crate should be spacious enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. You will also need to avoid putting anything in the crate other than food and water bowls, bedding, and a potty pad. Items like toys and bones have the potential to become hazards in case of turbulence and during take off and landing. We will guide you through the process of choosing the right kennel for your pet to meet airline requirements and ensure their safety.

It’s extremely beneficial to help your pet become familiar with the travel crate. Encourage them to spend time in the crate by placing their meals, favorite toys, blankets, and treats inside. Gradually increase the duration of time spent in the crate to ensure they feel comfortable and secure. This will help alleviate stress and anxiety during the journey. You can watch our video about how to acclimatize your pet to their crate.

A health certificate isn’t only a requirement for the airlines, it is also important to make sure that your pets are healthy enough to fly. You will need to schedule a visit to the veterinarian to ensure your pet is in good health and up-to-date on vaccinations. During this visit, you should discuss any specific concerns or considerations with your veterinarian, such as prior medical conditions.

While traveling with pets in air cargo can be a daunting prospect, careful planning and preparation can help ensure a safe and comfortable journey for your furry friend. Since opening in 1995, we have never had a pet die or be injured in flight. If you would like to learn more about your pet flying or an estimate, fill out our Pet Travel Form. Your dedicated Pet Travel Specialist will walk you through the whole process so that you can feel comfortable about your pets travel plans.
